2020 Design alternatives: a wardrobe configurator for bedroom studios

Last updated

Prices and features last checked

Closetforge is a white-label 3D wardrobe configurator and quoting tool for fitted-wardrobe makers. 2020 Design Live is kitchen and bathroom design software from Cyncly, and its product page now leads to Cyncly's Design Flex. We make Closetforge, so this comparison is written by an interested party; every Cyncly fact below is taken from Cyncly's own pages, linked and dated.

If you design bedrooms and wardrobes and searched for a 2020 Design alternative, the useful question is who should be doing the designing. 2020's products are tools for a professional designer, at a desk or in a showroom. Closetforge is a tool for your customer, on your own website, followed by a priced quote for you to approve.

What happened to 2020 Design Live

When we opened the 2020 Design Live product page on 9 October 2026, it redirected to Cyncly's Design Flex page (2020spaces.com/2020products/2020designlive, read 9 October 2026). The Design Flex page says that "Design Flex builds on the trusted capabilities of 2020 Design Live, with the added benefits of cloud connectivity for greater flexibility and collaboration", and that "designers can import existing projects from 2020 Design Live into Design Flex" (cyncly.com/products/design-flex, read 9 October 2026).

So in practice, a 2020 Design Live user today is looking at Design Flex, and this page compares against what Cyncly publishes for it.

What Design Flex is

Cyncly's page describes Design Flex as "the all-in-one kitchen and bath design software made for manufacturers, cabinet dealers, and closet professionals", "used by kitchen and bath designers, retailers, manufacturers, and remodelers". It lists a rendering engine that "produces photorealistic visuals by accurately simulating real-world illumination", access to "kitchen and bathroom manufacturer catalogs", the Flex Cloud as "a cloud-based infrastructure for kitchen and bath design software", and Cyncly Payments, "a fully embedded payment platform". The page states: "Get your Design Flex license today for $2,495/year", and "Design Flex is supported on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11" (cyncly.com/products/design-flex, read 9 October 2026).

An earlier Cyncly article, from December 2023, described 2020 Design Live as giving designers "the largest collection of manufacturer catalogs in the world" and a rendering engine, EZ Render, for photorealistic renderings and 360° panoramas (cyncly.com news, December 2023, read 9 October 2026).

What Closetforge is

Closetforge puts a finished wardrobe configurator on your own website, under your brand and your domain. A customer designs the wardrobe in 3D in six steps, or describes it to an AI assistant that makes the changes for them. Every change is checked against the same building rules, so a design that cannot be built is refused with a sentence that says what to do instead.

When the customer asks for a quote, their phone number is checked with a text-message code, and the server prices the design from your own settings: the boards you buy and what they cost, your waste allowance, your labour minutes and hourly rate, your mark-up, VAT, installation and travel. You receive a customer PDF and a workshop PDF with a cut list, the hardware and accessories, and a cut layout across the boards. By default nothing reaches the customer until you approve it, unless you switch on automatic sending.

Where they differ

Who designs. Design Flex, on Cyncly's description, is used by designers, retailers and manufacturers. The customer sits beside the designer, or receives a render. With Closetforge, the customer makes the first design themselves on your website, at any hour, and your time goes to the requests that arrive priced.

Kitchens. Design Flex is built around kitchens and bathrooms, with manufacturer catalogues for both. Closetforge does wardrobes and nothing else. A studio that sells kitchens as well as bedrooms needs kitchen software either way.

Where the price comes from. Design Flex's page describes manufacturer catalogues. Closetforge prices from the workshop's own price book: the boards you buy, cut and billed as sheets, your labour minutes and your rates. If you build wardrobes yourself rather than reselling a manufacturer's range, that is the difference that matters most.

Where it runs. Design Flex runs on Windows with cloud services. Closetforge runs in a browser, so your customer needs nothing installed.

Choose them if…

  • Choose Design Flex if you design kitchens and bathrooms as well as storage, and want one program for all of it.
  • Choose Design Flex if you sell a manufacturer's cabinet range and need that manufacturer's catalogue in the design.
  • Choose Design Flex if your designers work in a showroom and you want photorealistic renders and payments in the same software.
  • Choose Closetforge if you build fitted wardrobes from your own boards and want customers to design them on your own website, with each request priced from your own rates.
  • Choose both if you run a kitchen and bedroom studio: Design Flex for the kitchen work, Closetforge for the wardrobe enquiries on your website.

What Closetforge does not do

  • No kitchens. Closetforge handles wardrobes only, by decision. Kitchens, bathrooms, doors and other furniture are out of scope; a quote can carry custom lines for the odd extra.
  • CNC output is limited to a MaxCut CSV. The cut list exports as a CSV for the MaxCut panel optimiser. There is no file for a CNC machine and no link to your CAD.
  • EU supplier catalogues only. The supplier catalogues we import come from European suppliers, and there are no manufacturer kitchen or bedroom ranges. You enter your own board prices.
  • No integrations. It does not connect to accounting, CRM, e-commerce or job-management software.
  • No team management in your account. Extra logins are added by us on request. You and your staff sign in on your own address with the login you set up at signup.
  • No customer payments. It sends quotes; it does not take deposits.
