Software for carpenters: a wardrobe configurator for one

Last updated

Closetforge is a white-label 3D wardrobe configurator and quoting tool for carpenters who build and fit wardrobes, and it is small enough for one person to run alone.

Most software for carpenters assumes an office, an estimator and a few people to type things in. If you are the carpenter, the estimator, the person who answers the phone and the one who fits the doors, you need something that works while you are on a ladder.

Where a solo carpenter's time goes

The day is spent on site or in the workshop. The enquiries are answered in the evening, after the tools are put away: a message from a stranger who wants "a wardrobe", no measurements, no photo, no idea of a budget. Each one takes a conversation to turn into something you can price.

Then comes the measuring visit, which costs you a morning and some fuel. Some of those visits lead to a job. Others lead to a customer who wanted a rough figure and has gone quiet. Because you are on your own, every wasted visit is time taken from paid work.

What changes with a configurator

Your customers design the wardrobe on your website before they speak to you. They choose the width and height, how the inside is divided, the doors and the finish, and see it in 3D. By the time they ask for a quote, they have decided what they want, and you have the details in front of you.

They confirm their phone number with a text message code before the quote is made, so the requests you receive come from people who could be reached. You read the design, check the price, and decide whether a measuring visit is worth it.

Your own site, without a project

You do not need to build a website or learn a design tool. The configurator sits on your own address or a subdomain, in your name and colours, with your logo and your wording. Your finished wardrobes can be shown as examples that customers start from, and a customer who likes one can open it and change it to fit their room.

Setting it up still takes some work from you: choosing your boards and checking your prices. It is not instant, and we would rather say so. A short call at the start is usually enough to get the first version right.

A first price you did not have to write

The server prices the design from your own settings: your boards, your hardware, your labour time and your mark-up. You receive a customer quote and a workshop version with the cut list and hardware list, ready before you phone anyone back.

The quote is not sent out until you say so, unless you choose to switch on automatic sending. That means you can check a price in the evening, from a phone, and send it or change it yourself. You can also set when a measuring visit is free, paid or done remotely, based on distance, so the cost of travelling is no longer a favour you do for strangers.

Your evenings back

The aim is modest. The first questions are answered by the website, so your evening is spent reading finished requests instead of chasing missing measurements. A request that is vague gets a short reply from you, and one that is complete gets a price. You decide which ones deserve a visit.

The customer can also come back to the design later, change it, and share the link with a partner who has opinions. You do not have to run that conversation.

Deposits and the paperwork

Closetforge produces the quote and the documents; it does not collect money. A customer who accepts still deals with you for the deposit and the invoice, in the way you already work. What it does give you is a precise, itemised quote to refer to when you ask for that deposit, so the discussion starts from the same list on both sides.

What the Starter plan is for

The Starter plan is meant for exactly this kind of business: one person, one workshop, a website of your own, and a stream of enquiries to turn into jobs. It includes the configurator on your branded site and the quote and documents described above.

What each plan includes, and what it costs, is set out on the pricing page. It is kept in one place so that this page cannot fall out of date, so please read the numbers there. Starter has one login, which is you. If your business grows, a larger plan is there when you need it, and nothing about the way your customers use the site changes.

What it does not do

It does not take the measuring visit away. A design on a screen is not a surveyed room, and you should still check walls, floors and ceilings before you cut a board.

It does not manage your diary, your invoices, your accounts or your customers' payments. It designs wardrobes only; it does not do other furniture. It does not claim to save you a set number of hours, because that depends on how many enquiries you receive and how you work.

It does not connect to your accounting software, and the only export is a cut list for panel-saw optimisers.

Look before you decide

See the live demo and design a wardrobe the way your customers would. If you want to talk about whether it suits a business of one, book a call: it is a conversation, not a sales pitch, and you can ask about anything on this page.
