Can my wardrobe configurator run on my own domain instead of a Closetforge subdomain?
Last updated
Closetforge is a white-label 3D wardrobe configurator and quoting tool for fitted-wardrobe makers. Your site starts on a Closetforge subdomain, you can keep the website you already have beside it, and you can later connect your own domain. This page explains all three.
The subdomain you start with
When your workshop is created it gets an address under closetforge.com, such as yourworkshop.closetforge.com. Your public site and your back office (/admin) both live there.
Open Settings → Domains (/admin/settings) to see it. It is marked Managed by us. Its status tells you honestly where it stands:
- Setting up… means the address has been requested and is not answering yet. This usually takes a minute or two.
- Set up by hand means the automatic step did not finish, and a person at Closetforge is adding the address for you. You get an email when it is live.
- Active means the address answers and your site is served there.
Keeping the website you already have
You do not have to replace your current website. Keep it as it is and add a link to your Closetforge site from its menu or home page, for example "Design your wardrobe". There is nothing to install on your old site. When you are ready, connecting your own domain is the recommended next step, so customers stay on your address, but it is not required.
Connecting your own domain
You can serve the same site on a domain you own, for example wardrobes.yourbrand.com or yourbrand.com.
- In Settings → Domains, type the domain under Add a domain and press Add domain.
- The card shows the DNS record to create at the company where you bought the domain (your registrar or DNS provider). For an address like
wardrobes.yourbrand.comit is a CNAME record. For the bare domain itself, your provider must support an ALIAS or ANAME record; if it does not, the card gives you A records to use instead. - Press Check DNS. You can also leave it: pending domains are checked again automatically for a while.
While you wait, the domain shows Waiting for DNS. Until the record is found nothing changes for your visitors: your site keeps working on its current address. Once we see the record, the status moves to Activating… and then Active, and HTTPS is switched on for you. If we later stop seeing the domain point at us, the status reads Problem: usually a DNS record that was changed at the registrar.
A domain is never taken from another workshop, and an address that has not been verified is never used to serve anyone's site.
Which address is primary
With more than one active address, one of them is your Primary domain. Search engines use it, so pick the address you want customers to find. Press Make primary on the one you prefer; only an active domain can be primary. You cannot remove the only domain that serves your site.
What changes for your customers
Once your domain is active and primary, it is the address your site gives search engines, and a visitor who opens any of your other addresses is sent on to it permanently, with the page and the language kept. Old links and bookmarks therefore keep working. The site still carries the small "Powered by Closetforge" notice and the end-consumer notice, whichever address it is on.
What changes for signing in
Your back office follows your site: sign in at /admin on the address you use. Three things are tied to that address:
- Your session. Signing in on one address does not sign you in on another, so sign in again after the move.
- Email sign-in links are sent for, and open on, the address where you asked for them.
- Passkeys belong to the address they were added on. After moving to your own domain, sign in with your password or an email link, add a new passkey there, and remove the old one under Settings → Security.
